For gyms

Old fashioned gym businesses make revenue out of monthly membership fees, smart gym businesses make revenue out of activations and have more sustainable and predictable cash flow. What is the difference between monthly membership fees and activations?

Memberships are paid by people who plan to go to the gym. Activations are paid by people who want to have access to the gym.  With monthly membership fees gym will keep clients who plan to go to the gym constantly. With activations, gym will keep clients who are afraid of loosing specific access to the gym.

It’s about good business management and well known psychological trick called “Loss aversion” which says that people will rather act in attempt not to lose some value than act in attempt to gain same value.

Let’s say that in magic gym month of January you get 100 gym memberships. Out of those 100, 20 are constant gym users and 80 of them are “new year new me” users. By the month of March, gym memberships are back to those 20 users only. Point of activations is to increase the number of those “new year new me” users who keep paying the monthly membership

Activation flexibility

One of the main reasons new clients are not starting gym membership and attendance – is the opinion that they need to signup at the beginning of the month so they wouldn’t waste money from monthly fee if they signup in the middle or at the end of the month.
